On Sunday, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit at Dodge City to lead 3-2 with less than 15 minutes remaining. However, the Conquistadors answered with a pair of goals to shock the Lady Tigers by a score of 4-3.
Cowley is now 2-1 on the season, while Dodge City (1-3-1) picked up its first win.
Dodge City got first-half goals from Meike Patzold and Mariam El Mir to lead 2-0.
"We came out flat in the first half, and that was not us," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
After a talk at halftime, Cowley came out looking like a different team in the second half.
Freshman Helene Braren got Cowley on the board nine minutes into the second half as she scored off an assist from Himari Sato. The Lady Tigers would tie the game at 2-2 as Hina Suzuki scored on another assist from Sato with 20:38 remaining.
Suzuki would put Cowley on top 3-2 when she scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the season as she scored on a penalty kick with 14:10 left to play.
However, some questionable calls allowed Dodge City to score twice off corner kicks in the game's final 10 minutes. The Conquistadors Nuria Garcia's goal with 9:11 remaining tied the game at 3-3, and Tara Knego gave Dodge City the lead for good as she scored the go-ahead goal with just under three minutes left to play.
"We stepped up our intensity in the second half and were able to grab the lead before we had some judgemental calls cost us the game," dos Santos said.
Cowley out-shot Dodge City 18-10 but could not come away with the victory.
The Lady Tigers will open a three-game homestand by taking on No. 10-ranked Butler Community College (3-0-2) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
"It will be a tough game," dos Santos said. "We need to bounce back from the game at Dodge City and be ready for Wednesday."
