Taking part in a pair of duals Tuesday in Great Bend, KS, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College wrestling team shut out No. 11-ranked Neosho County 46-0 before rallying to defeat host Barton Community College 21-18.
With the wins, Cowley is now 7-0 in duals with all the matches coming against conference foes.
The Tigers got a big win from Austin Kincaid to open its match against Neosho and never looked back as they picked up wins at all 10 weight classes. Kincaid avenged an earlier loss to the Panthers' Roberto Camacho in the 125-pound weight class.
"We got on a roll early with Kincaid pinning a guy that had beaten him earlier in the season, and the guys seemed to feed off each other and kept it rolling," Cowley head coach Beau Vest said.
Cowley won four of its 10 matches against Neosho by fall.
However, forced to make some last minute changes to the lineup, Cowley found itself in trouble against Barton. Trailing the Cougars 18-9, Cowley got a pin from freshman Ryan Locke at 184 pounds to pull within 18-15. Tiger freshman Matt Santos then won a 4-2 decision over Barton's Davontai Robinson to even the match at 18-18, before another Cowley freshman, Austin Thornton, defeated the Cougars' Ayston Perez 3-2 in the heavyweight match to give Cowley the 21-18 win.
"The guys rallied together and those bottom three stepped up for their team," Vest said. "I hope this is something we can build on and it shows our team how to overcome adversity."
Barton is now 5-4 in duals.
Cowley will return home to face No. 17-ranked Labette Community College and Northwest Kansas Tech, which is tied with Neosho County in the rankings at 11th, in a pair of duals on Tuesday, March 2. The first match will begin at 4 p.m. inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
"Labette has a lot of history and some dangerous guys in their lineup," Vest said. "And, Northwest Tech has got a tough team. We need to take advantage of every opportunity we get to try and keep improving."
