Cowley remembers their longtime coach during their home track and field meet
Hosting the Mark A. At the Phillips Tiger Classic on Saturday in Arkansas City, the nationally ranked Cowley College men’s and women’s track and field teams honored the late coach's memory by achieving 7 national qualifiers and 10 heat wins.
From 2003-2021, Phillips was the head coach for the Cowley College track and field program. He was inducted into the NJCAA Track Coach's Hall of Fame in 2021 and the Cowley Tigers Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020 after leading the Tigers to two national championships, 32 Jayhawk Conference titles, 11 Region VI titles, and 14 top-five finishes at the NJCAA National Championships.
Sadly, coach Phillips passed away in 2022.
"This weekend is always a special weekend for our program," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "Getting to host a home meet in honor of Coach Phillips, where our athletes get seen by our community, alumni that come back for it, local supporters, and family, is important to us. We do not take it lightly, and it is a labor of love."
The No. 12-ranked Lady Tigers were once again led by their pole vault crew, with Aaliyah Treat placing first, Ke'Mauria Burnham placing second, and Elizabeth Brozek and Ariana Gomez finishing third and fourth, respectively. All four vaulters hit national qualifying marks.
The No. 21-ranked Tiger men were led by a big day from their hammer crew, with Joshua (Kais) Patton winning the event with a mark of 171-5, and Brett Clevenger placing second with a national qualifying mark of 160-10.
"The men's hammer had a great day," Rieth said.
The Tiger duo of Esteban Boisseau and Alexis Realland were equally impressive, finishing one and two in the 1,500-meter run.
All totaled, Cowley had 16 new top-15 all-time program marks at the Mark A. Phillips Tiger Classic.
The Tiger track and field teams will take part in the Midwest Classic and Multis on Friday and Saturday in Emporia, KS.
"Just like always, we want to continue to build on this for the rest of the season," Rieth said.
