Tiger track and field athletes continue to shine at WSU and Washburn
Getting numerous national qualifying performances and heat wins on Friday and Saturday, the Cowley College men’s and women’s track and field teams did well while having the majority of its athletes take part in the Wilson Invite at Wichita State University, and a handful of others competed at the Washburn University Open and Multis in Topeka, KS.
After taking last weekend off from competing because of the snow and icy roads, the Tigers were ready to get after it this past weekend. Cowley had nine national qualifying performances and 19 new Top 15 marks in the program's history.
"What an excellent weekend of performances," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "We had many personal bests across the board."
The Lady Tigers' 60-meter hurdle group had four new Top 15 marks and was led by Kennedy Khamvongsa, who hit the national qualifying mark in the event. Fellow Lady Tigers' Jessi McDowell and Katie Cook had massive personal bests that hit the national qualifying mark in the weight throw, while the Cowley men's pole vault squad had three national qualifiers in the event with Kaden Berry, Zach Stephen, and Ty Spivey.
The Lady Tigers Distance Medley Relay team of Euvia Bennett, Grace Knight, Zuzana Bokova, and Linda Filipova had a stellar day at Washburn and are currently ranked 3rd in the nation.
" Linda and Euvia came back the next day and qualified in the 1,000, narrowly missing the school record by less than a second," Rieth said. "Jasmine Calvo narrowly missed the national qualifier in the 5k, but had a personal best of over 30 seconds in the event. Nash Young and Erika Wiese also had big days in the Multi, and both are currently ranked in the Top 10 nationally. It was a huge weekend for us. We still have several that are right on the line of qualifying in certain events and need people to get healthy, but we are looking good so far."
Next up for the Tiger track and field teams will be competitions at Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Southern on Friday and Saturday.
