Tiger indoor track and field teams start fast at season-opening meet
Opening the indoor season at the Washburn University Rust Buster on Friday, January 16, the Cowley College men’s and women’s track and field teams set the tone for what they are hoping will be a successful indoor campaign.
The Lady Tiger pole vault crew highlighted the competition by having three national qualifying performances. Ke'Mauria (Keke) Burnham, Aaliyah Treat, and Elizabeth Brozek, 10-6 each, placed in the top 15 in the event.
"We had a great opener at Washburn," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "Especially the women's pole vault side of the team, where we had three national qualifiers and two top-five program marks all time. Keke, Aailyah, and Elizabeth have the potential to be the best pole vault trio to ever come through Cowley."
Rieth was also pleased with the performance of Aaliyah Treat in the hurdles, Jada Schnieders in the long jump, and the group of mile runners consisting of Linda Filipova, Euvia Bennett, Jasmine Calvo, and Marta Herrero-Lombardo.
The Tiger men were led by freshman Quintin Richardson, placing first in the high jump, clearing 6-6 ½.
"Quintin did a great job of qualifying for nationals in the high jump, and we believe that he has big potential and that mark should go even higher," Rieth said.
Cooper Leonard won his flight and placed ninth in the shot put, and the Tiger throws group achieved numerous personal best performances.
"Overall, it was a great opener, and we hope to continue to stay healthy and continue to build on this meet," Rieth said.
The Tiger track and field teams will return to Washburn University in Topeka, KS, to compete on Friday and Saturday.
