The defending national champion Cowley College women's cross-country team could not defend its title while placing eighth at the NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championships held Saturday in Richmond, VA.
Mesa Community College took home the team title, while Paradise Valley Community College finished as the national runner-up.
Cowley finished ahead of 32 other schools at the national meet and was led by sophomore Kayli Myers's 26th-place finish (19:42.9) in the 5,000-meter race, earning her Coaches Association All-American honors.
Fellow sophomore Lili-Rose Breheret also earned Coaches Association All-American honors after placing 48th at 20:13.1. Meanwhile, freshman Savannah Fischer was just behind in 51st place at 20:17.2.
Heartland Community College's Nora Brady won the women's race with a time of 17:34.6.
Other Lady Tiger runners were Pauline Althoff (21.30.4), who placed 116th; Alivia Bacon (211:47.6), who finished 138th; Dayanna Brito-Hernandez, who placed 158th; and Marianna Lozano-Cardenas (23:13.6), who finished 221st out of 317 runners.
"We really went for a top three podium finish, but unfortunately, things did not work out as we hoped," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "It just was not our day. We ran good but did not put together five solid finishes."
With Myers and Breheret being the team's only two sophomores, Rieth should return a team that can challenge to return to the podium.
