No. 1-ranked Cowley volleyball team picks up road win at Indy
Playing its first conference road contest of the season, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory at Independence on Wednesday. The Lady Tigers won 25-18, 25-10, 25-12.
Cowley, winners of 88 matches in a row, improves its record to 7-0 and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Independence is now 6-9 and 0-2 in conference play.
After being pushed a bit in a 25-18 win of set one, Cowley asserted its dominance in 25-10 and 25-12 wins of set two and three.
"We came out a little slow after not playing in a week, but once we cleaned up our unforced errors and started serving more aggressively, that's where you saw us start to take off in sets two and three," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.
Freshman Cassie Ellegood led Cowley with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage.
"She was really clicking, and the tempo was what we liked," Gream said. "It was nice to see her have a major impact, which made it harder to defend us."
Fellow freshman Lana Gomilanovic added nine kills, five digs, and three aces.
"Lana is playing really solid and getting more and more confident each day," Gream said. "When we have our other hitters going with her, it's a hard force to stop."
Sophomores Hanna Darvas (31 assists) and Ashlynn Jaccard (seven digs) also played well.
The Lady Tigers will have a short recovery time as they will host Seminole State University today at 6:30 p.m.
"With tournaments the next two weeks, we wanted to get our international players used to playing back-to-back games," Gream said. "Seminole is much improved from last year, and we look for them to put up a fight."
