Former Lady Tiger volleyball standout to play professionally
December 11, 2012
Roslandy Acosta, a two-time All-American volleyball player at Cowley College during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, recently finished a stellar two years at the University of Arkansas and realized a life-long dream of playing professional volleyball by signing a professional contract to play with Valencianas de Juncos of the Puerto Rico Superior League.
At Cowley, Acosta was a two-time Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player and was chosen by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the 2010 NJCAA Division II Player of the Year. She helped Cowley win back-to-back conference and district titles, while the Lady Tigers placed second nationally in 2009 and third in the nation in 2010.
For her efforts, Acosta was named Cowley College's 2011 Female Student Athlete of the Year.
At Arkansas, she was named an AVCA All-South Region First Team performer following a season in which she averaged 3.15 kills per set, tallied seven double-double performances and had double-digit kill figures in the final 15 matches of the season. She closed out her Razorback career with a career-high 20 kills against Wichita State in the NCAA Tournament.
Acosta was also voted to the All-SEC First Team, and during the year, was named the MVP of the season-opening Arkansas Invitational and earned all-tournament honors at the Adidas/Michigan Challenge, and is up for All-American honors.
"From our first day of recruiting Roslandy, she told us her dream was to play Division I Volleyball in the States and then to travel and play professionally," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. "I am so happy to hear that she has already found a great team to continue playing with after she graduates from the University of Arkansas. It's an amazing thing to be a part of a player's journey and Roslandy has had a journey with many great accomplishments. Her success at Cowley continued at Arkansas and I am sure it will continue into her Professional Career."
