Cowley volleyball dismantles Coffeyville, sets up showdown with Johnson County
October 25, 2011
Focusing only on the task at hand, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team picked up an impressive 25-15, 25-13, 25-17 win at Coffeyville on Monday. The victory, coupled with Johnson County's five-set win at Neosho County on Monday, means the Lady Tigers' home match vs. Johnson County on Wednesday will be for the conference title and the top-seed in the district tournament.
Cowley, winners of 15 matches in a row, is now 31-2 overall and 9-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Lady Tigers will host Johnson County (21-10 overall, 9-0 Jayhawk East) Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Instead of looking ahead to Wednesday's match, Cowley came out ready to take care of business Monday night at Coffeyville. The Lady Tigers had five players finish with at least six kills and had only 11 attacking errors in the match.
Cowley used a strong serving game, which featured six aces, to take Coffeyville out of their offense.
"We served very aggressively and controlled the tempo of the match," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. "I thought this was the most even match we have played in terms of everybody in our starting lineup contributing."
Sophomore Goda Jankauskaite finished with 11 kills and no hitting errors, while Danika Maggard and Martyna Gluchowicz added 10 kills apiece. Freshman middle hitter Cathy Hafenstine chipped in with six kills, and sophomore middle hitter Emily Barto finished with eight kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Bahner thought this was the most complete match Barto had put together this season.
"Emily brought good energy and played like a sophomore," Bahner said.
The loss, coupled with Kansas City's win over Highland, dropped Coffeyville (19-16 overall, 5-4 Jayhawk East) into fifth place in the conference.
Cowley will now set its sights on a fourth straight conference title when they host Johnson County Wednesday at 5 p.m. Last year, the team's shared the conference title. After playing the previous two regular season matches between the teams in Overland Park, Bahner is looking forward to hosting the Lady Cavaliers in the regular season finale.
"I am extremely excited we get to host Johnson County this year, this is the match we have been working towards," Bahner said. "There is a lot riding on this match and this is what college athletics is all about."
Wednesday's contest will be tied in with Cowley's Dig Pink Event and Sophomore Recognition Night. Fans are asked to wear pink to the match. Prior to the match, the Lady Tiger sophomores will be recognized for their contributions to the squad.
"This will give us a chance to celebrate what our sophomores have done for the program," Bahner said.
