Volleyball beats Longview for third time this season
October 24, 2011
Just like the previous two meetings between the teams, Longview pushed Cowley to four games but were unable to come out on top. The victory was Cowley's 14th in a row and improved the Lady Tigers' record to 30-2 on the season.
Cowley averaged a solid 18.75 digs per set, but also committed 30 hitting errors in the match.
"I believe our defense overall helped us win the match," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. "However, we need to be better at making good decisions on our attacks and mixing up our shots."
Martyna Gluchowicz led Cowley with 24 kills, while Goda Jankauskaite and Cathy Hafenstine added 13 and nine kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Molley Scanlon finished with 56 assists and 13 digs.
"I feel like Molley and Martyna have really started to make good connections with one another as setter and hitter," Bahner said.
Danika Maggard and Shanna Seyfarth also played well and shared team-high honors with 16 digs.
"Danika had a great match defensively, anytime she can match our libero in digs you know she is playing good," Bahner said.
Cowley will play an important conference match at Coffeyville tonight at 6:30 p.m. Coffeyville is tied for fourth place in the Jayhawk East with a conference mark of 5-3.
"Their crowd is known for being extremely rowdy, so we need to focus on our system and block out the external noise," Bahner said. "They have one strong go-to outside hitter. We have to put a strong block up against her. I believe if we can slow her down with our blocking and play good backcourt defense we will have a successful night."
Cowley will then return home to play Johnson County Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Lady Cavaliers and Lady Tigers are currently tied for first place in the Jayhawk East with conference records of 8-0.
