Volleyball team picks up big road win at Highland
October 20, 2011
With the regular season coming to an end next Wednesday, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team moved a half-game in front of Johnson County in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division thanks to its 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19 win at Highland on Wednesday.
The victory improves the Lady Tigers' record to 8-0 in the Jayhawk East. Cowley has now won 13 matches in a row to move to 29-2 on the season. Highland (20-9 overall, 6-3 Jayhawk East) remains in third place in the conference.
Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner was impressed with Highland and glad her team was able to come away with the victory.
"I believe we got their best match," Bahner said. "It was a very good conference match that was back and forth all the way through."
Sophomore middle hitter Goda Jankauskaite had a big match and led Cowley with 16 kills.
"Goda was our go to person the first two games and helped us push through some tough times," Bahner said.
Also playing well were hitters Martyna Gluchowicz and Danika Maggard, who finished with 14 and nine kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Molley Scanlon not only led the team in assists (41), she also led in digs with 13.
Bahner felt having the ability to use Georgina Perez, Bridget Paulk, and Sabetha Young as outside hitters, helped bring versatility to Cowley's lineup.
Returning from the long road trip, Cowley will host a non-conference match vs. Longview Friday at 6:30 p.m. Friday's match will mark the third time this season the Lady Tigers have played Longview, with Cowley winning both of the previous two matches in four games.
"It will be great to play Longview at home because it is tough to beat a team three times in one season," Bahner said.
The Lady Tigers will then play at Coffeyville (5-3 Jayhawk East) on Monday before hosting Johnson County (7-0 Jayhawk East) Wednesday at 5 p.m.
