October 4, 2011
In a match up of teams on opposite sides of the conference standings, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team had no trouble defeating an overmatched Independence squad 25-4, 25-23, 25-11 Monday in Independence.
With the win, Cowley improves to 21-2 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. For the Lady Pirates, it was the squad's 16th loss in 17 games as they are now 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
Lady Tiger head coach Jenifer Bahner used Monday's match as a chance to get each player on the roster playing time.
"We have so many talented players that it was nice to have an opportunity to try different things and get everyone time on the court," Bahner said.
After the 25-4 domination of game one, Cowley trailed 19-13 in game two before sophomore Goda Jankauskaite put down six kills in a row to tie the match and help rally the Lady Tigers to the win of game two.
"We are an emotional team and needed to be more stable in that second game," Bahner said. "Fortunately, Goda was a big presence for us and was our go to person."
Jankauskaite finished with a match-high 18 kills, while freshman Cathy Hafenstine added seven kills. Employing two setters in the match, Molley Scanlon (17 assists) and Emily Barto (15 assists) combined for 32 assists.
Freshman Erin Lichter also played well and added nine digs.
"Erin is a very consistent player and we need her playing at a high level for us," Bahner said.
Next up for the Lady Tigers is the Central Nebraska Tournament Friday and Saturday in Platte, NE.
On Friday, Cowley will face NJCAA Division I No. 8-ranked Iowa Western at 3 p.m. and will then take on North Platte (NE) Community College at 7 p.m. The Lady Tigers will return to action Saturday vs. No. 6-ranked Iowa Lakes at 9:30 a.m. and will wrap up play at the tournament against host Central Nebraska at 11:30 a.m.
"All of these squads are very good teams, so it will be a good challenge for us," Bahner said. "This will be our toughest weekend of the season since opening the year at the Johnson County tournament."
