Labette no match for top-ranked Lady Tigers
September 13, 2011
Returning to action in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team continued its winning ways with a 25-14, 29-27, 25-18 win at Labette on Monday.
With the victory, the Lady Tigers improve to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk East. The loss drops Labette's record to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Johnson County currently sits atop the conference standings with a record of 3-0.
Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner was happy her team was able to win in three games, but said the 29-27 win of the second game of the match demonstrated that nothing will be handed to the Lady Tigers just because they are the top-ranked team in the nation.
"I want our team to learn from this match that at any given time anybody can win," Bahner said.
Cowley sophomore Goda Jankauskaite led Cowley with 11 kills, while sophomore Emily Barto contributed eight kills and nine digs.
"Emily did well, we have been talking a lot about her minimizing her attacking errors and being smarter with her attack choices," Bahner said. "I thought she and Molley (Scanlon) really stepped up as sophomore leaders through their actions and play."
Cowley's busy week continues on Wednesday when they play at Kansas City at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Blue Devils are 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the Jayhawk East. Kansas City has won five matches in a row thanks to solid play from freshman outside hitter Lisa Angello, who was recently named the KJCCC/Verizon Wireless Player of the Week after compiling 42 kills, 63 digs, 12 Aces and 6.5 blocks in five matches.
Cowley needed four games to get past Kansas City a year ago, and suffered their only conference defeat in 2009 the last time they traveled to Kansas City.
"They play good at home, so we will need to be focused and ready to play," Bahner said. "Minimizing our errors and playing good defense will be the two main keys for us."
