Volleyball makes easy work of Hesston in home opener
September 1, 2011
The Lady Tigers gave the home fans plenty to cheer about as they improved to 5-0 with the win of the home opener.
"It was good to get some different people playing time," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. "It makes it more fun when everybody contributes to the win."
After easy wins of the first two games and the score tied 1-1 in the third and final game, Bahner called timeout to get her team's attention.
"It seemed like we were going through the motions and not staying disciplined on our side of the net," Bahner said. "I wanted them to be sure to stay focused on our side and be in the right positions."
The team seemed to get the message as they scored eight of the next 11 points and were not threatened again in the 25-11 win.
Sophomore transfer Goda Jankauskaite had an impressive season debut as the 6'2" middle hitter finished with a team-high 10 kills in 11 opportunities.
"It was exciting to see her get on the court and play that well," Bahner said. "She is going to keep progressing and getting better."
Freshman right side hitter Martyna Gluchowicz added seven kills and seven digs, while fellow freshman Erin Lichter finished with six kills. Emily Barto, the returning Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year, chipped in with five kills and 11 assists.
Cowley will look to remain unbeaten when they host Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Saturday at noon.
"Saturday's match will give us an opportunity to compete and keep improving," Bahner said.
