Acosta named AVCA Player of the Year; Berroteran nabs All-American honors
December 10, 2010
Having already been named all-conference, all-district, and to the all-tournament team at nationals, Cowley College volleyball players Roslandy Acosta and Elena Berroteran capped their incredible sophomore seasons by being named All-Americans.
Acosta, a outside hitter/setter from Vargas, Venezuela, was not only named a first-team All-American, she was chosen by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the NJCAA Division II Player of the Year.
Acosta, who was recently named Cowley College's December Female Student-Athlete of the Month, led Cowley in kills (439), solo blocks (47), block assists (72) and was second on the team in assists (648).
"I felt watching her perform at the national tournament that she was the top player there," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said. "I am glad the other coaches recognized that. This is an incredible honor for her and our program."
Berroteran, a libero from Caracas, Venezuela, was recognized for her solid play by being named a second-team All-American. Berroteran led the Lady Tigers in digs (562), serve-receive passes (811) and aces (52). She also added 105 assists throughout the season.
"I have always said the great thing about Elena is that she is an all-around volleyball player," Bahner said. 'She is able to step in and play any role we need her to and do it phenomenally. I could not be more proud of her to receive this honor."
A perfect example of this came at the national tournament when Bahner moved Berroteran from her normal position of libero to the front row after Cowley fell behind Kishwaukee (IL) Community College two games to one. Berroteran would spark the team and finish with nine kills in the last two games as Cowley rallied for the win.
The duo helped Cowley win back-to-back conference and district titles, while winning an astounding 66 of 75 matches during their two years at the school. They also played pivotal roles during Cowley's school-record 29 match win streak and led the Lady Tigers to the highest winning percentage (89.5) in the program's history as Cowley finished this past season with a record of 34-4.
