Burnham ties pole-vault record; Tiger track teams compete at Ichabod Invitational
Led by freshman Ke’Mauria Burnham, who tied the school record in the women’s pole vault, the nationally ranked Cowley College women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams got in a final tune-up before the Region Championships by competing at the Washburn University Ichabod Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Topeka, KS.
The No. 10-ranked Lady Tiger track and field teams also got new national qualifying performances from its 4x400-meter relay team, Ariana Gomez in the pole vault, and Linda Filipova in the 800-meter run. Burnham cleared 12'6 ¾ in the pole vault to tie the school record previously set by Katie Gillmore during the 2010 season.
"For Ke'Mauria to tie a former Tiger great's record, this early into her stay at Cowley, is a great sign of things to come," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "She has been ranked first since week one and has been on fire."
Cowley's Aaliyah Treat also vaulted over 12 feet for the first time in her career. At the same time, Ariana Gomez became the fourth Lady Tiger to hit the national qualifier in the pole vault.
Kaden Berry, who is ranked fifth in the men's pole vault, did well, as did Zach Stephen, as the duo cleared 15-6 ¼ and placed ninth and 10th, respectively. The Cowley men's indoor track and field team is ranked 22nd.
The Tiger indoor track and field teams have qualified 19 individuals for the national championships.
Cowley will now turn its attention to this weekend's Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburg, KS.
"We want to finish in the top three on the Region side of things, as well as compete for the Eastern Conference Championship," Rieth said.
