Lady Tiger tennis team dominates region tennis tournament
Capturing four singles titles and two doubles championships, the No. 2-ranked Cowley College women’s tennis team took home the Region VI title on Wednesday in Pratt, KS.
The Lady Tigers got individual region titles from the following singles players: Cynthia Wanjala, Chiho Takada, Lisa Takamura, and Kendra Arostegui. Cowley's doubles titles came from the duo of Cynthia Wanjala and Naghely Garcia Galian, and Takada and Takamura.
Cowley won six of the nine individual region titles and finished with 13.5 team points. Barton and Pratt tied for second with 7 team points, and Seward placed fourth with four points.
"I am happy with the results and level of tennis we played," Cowley head coach Marcel Miasato said.
The Lady Tigers will have some time off before taking part in the NJCAA Division 1 Tennis Championships on May 2-6 in Sumter, SC.
"I am excited to see how we do at nationals," Miasato said.
SINGLES
*No. 1 – Sofia Karlau (CC) defeated Emma Guzman (Pratt) 6-0, 6-4; lost to Mishel Lobotenko (Seward) 6-2, 2-6, 0-6 in the region title match.
*No. 2 – Cynthia Wanjala (CC) defeated Paula Elena Oborocea (Seward) 6-0, 6-4; defeated Danira Gabriel Ndengoue Kenmeni (Barton) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the region title match.
*No. 3 – Naghely Garcia Galian (CC) lost to Ilse Smaalders (Pratt) 1-6, 4-6; lost to Rosaline Akombo (Seward) 4-6, 7-5, 5-7.
*No. 4 – Chiho Takada (CC) defeated Patricia Sazambile (Seward) 6-0, 6-0; defeated Sandra Rodriguez Dominguez (Pratt) 6-4, 6-4 in the region title match.
*No. 5 – Lisa Takamura (CC) defeated Salalee Seejong (Barton) 6-2, 6-2; defeated Barbara Mattar (Pratt) 6-0, 7-5 in the region title match.
*No. 6 – Kendra Arostegui (CC) received a bye; defeated Alyse Zimmerman (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0 in the region title match.
DOUBLES
*No. 1 – Wanjala/Garcia Galian (CC) defeated Campigotto/Ndengoue Kenmeni (Barton) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; defeated Akombo/Lobotenko (Seward) 7-5, 6-4 in the region title match.
*No. 2 – Lee/Karlau (CC) lost to Russell/Guzman (Pratt) 6-4, 2-6, 5-7; defeated Achik/Oborocea (Seward) 6-4, 6-1.
*No. 3 – Takada/Takamura (CC) received a bye; defeated Mattar/Zimmerman (Pratt) 6-0, 6-2 in the region title match.
