Lady Tiger tennis team gets tough test in season-opener
Facing a Washburn University squad that is ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II, the Cowley College women’s tennis team learned a lot about itself in the 9-0, season-opening loss on Sunday in Topeka, KS.
Despite not coming up with any wins, Cowley had strong efforts throughout its lineup. Lady Tiger sophomore Kendra Arostegui won her opening set at No. 5 singles before falling 6-3, 1-6, 3-10 against Washburn's Mariana Silva Balsa.
Fellow sophomore Cynthia Wanjala also battled hard before losing her match at No. 2 singles against the Ichabods' Daniela Tijaro by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
"The match against Washburn was a great opportunity to test ourselves," Cowley head coach Marcel Miasato said. "I am pleased with how we performed."
The Lady Tigers will now get an opportunity to play at home when they take on Midwestern State University (TX) on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Ark City High School tennis courts.
"I am looking forward to playing at home and am excited to see how we do," Miasato said.
