Lady Tigers split a pair of tough matches in Oklahoma
April 2, 2007
With two of its top-three tennis players unable to play at full strength, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College women's tennis team defeated Collin County and lost to East Central Oklahoma Saturday in Ada, Oklahoma.
Freshman Karolina Porizkova battled illness throughout the weekend, while sophomore Hanane Toumi struggled to overcome a foot injury. Both players lost their singles matches against ECU as Cowley lost the match by a score of 5-4.
However, Cowley did beat perennial power Collin County by a score of 6-3. Collin County is currently ranked seventh in the NJCAA.
"We beat them pretty soundly," Cowley head coach Brad Louderback said.
Cowley freshman Kasia Siwosz, the No. 1-ranked junior college tennis player, picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Collin County's Angie Detudamo before pulling out a hard fought 6-4, 6-3 win over ECU's Dasha Segunchuk.
Louderback considered the match against Segunchuk to be one of a handful of difficult matches Siwosz will face this season. "Kasia went out and took care of business," Louderback said.
After losing their No. 3 doubles match against Collin County, Cowley's Katie McKee and Monica Medina came back to defeat ECU's Katrina Christensen and Erin Miller 8-1.
"They turned around and really played well against ECU," Louderback said. "They should have gone into that Collin match the way they did against ECU at No. 3 doubles."
Cowley is now 6-2 on the season.
"I am hoping we will grow from this, and matches like this will prepare us for nationals," Louderback said.
The Lady Tigers will return to the court Thursday when they host No. 14-ranked Barton County at 2 p.m. at the J.C. Louderback Tennis Center. "They should have a pretty good team," Louderback said.
