Lady Tigers blank Coffeyville 3-0 in District Tourney opener
Facing the Coffeyville Community College women’s soccer team for the second time in a week, the top-seeded Cowley College Lady Tigers defeated the eighth-seeded Lady Red Ravens 3-0 on Saturday in the First Round of the Plains District Tournament played in Arkansas City.
Cowley got a first-half goal from Saki Sanno off an assist from Camille Carniglia as the Lady Tigers went into halftime with a slim, 1-0 lead despite dominating the shots on goal (8-0) in the opening half.
"Coffeyville played with 11 in the back and never really pressured us," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We created opportunities, but could not get more than Saki's goal to go in."
The score would remain 1-0 before the Lady Tigers scored a pair of goals in the gam's final 19 minutes of play.
Cowley would get second-half goals from Sara Cortes and Sabrina Barbosa, while Sanno and Cortes assisted on the goals.
"We made some changes at halftime and finally got two more goals," dos Santos said.
The Lady Tigers placed 20 shots on goal and outshot Coffeyville 63-1 in the contest.
The shutout was the eighth of the season for the No. 7-ranked Lady Tigers as they remain unbeaten with a record of 12-0-4. Coffeyville finishes its season with a record of 1-12-1.
Cowley will remain home to face fourth-seeded Barton Community College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Cougars are 12-7-2 following a 1-0 win over fifth-seeded Garden City on Sunday.
The Lady Tigers won both regular-season contests against the Cougars by scores of 2-0 and 2-1.
"This will be another Barton and Cowley rivalry," dos Santos said. "Barton is a good team and is motivated, so we will need to come out with the right mindset."
