Lady Tiger soccer team captures the conference title with a 5-0 win at Dodge City
Continuing its dominating run through the Jayhawk Conference, the No. 8-ranked Cowley College women’s soccer team remained unbeaten and captured the conference title with a 5-0 shutout at Dodge City on Wednesday.
"This was an exciting moment for the team," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "The girls took it to heart that we could not afford to miss out on any points in the regular season, so they came out focused and capitalized early in the match."
The Lady Tigers (10-0-4) improve to 10-0-3 in the Jayhawk Conference with one conference game remaining on Saturday at last-place Coffeyville.
Cowley scored three goals in the opening half as they built a commanding 3-0 lead. Sophie Knaab got the scoring started just over two minutes into the contest and assisted on Sara Cortes's goal with 14:24 left in the first half.
Sthefany Silva finished the scoring in the first half by blasting in a shot from 45 yards out.
"We controlled the entire first half and continued to pressure them," dos Santos said.
The Lady Tigers would score two more goals in the second half as they recorded their seventh shutout of the season.
Lauren Howard and Saki Sanno would score second-half goals for the Tigers as they outshot Dodge City 33-2 and 19-2 in shots on goal.
"We continued pressuring Dodge City in the second half, and everybody on the team had an opportunity to play and contribute to the win," dos Santos said.
Dodge City, losers of five games in a row, falls to 6-9 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
Cowley will host Coffeyville on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Red Ravens (2-14-2) have struggled to a conference mark of 1-11-1.
"We are not looking ahead; we need to take care and prepare for the next match at Coffeyville," dos Santos said.
