Cowley women’s soccer puts on a clinic in 2-0 win over Dodge City
The No. 7-ranked Cowley College women’s soccer team outshot visiting Dodge City 33-0 in a 2-0 win over the Conquistadors on Saturday in Arkansas City.
Cowley has shut out five opponents in a row to improve its record to 5-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Dodge City falls to 4-3 and 2-3 in the conference.
"I am happy we won and got the three points, but the girls were frustrated they were not able to finish the majority of the opportunities we created," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
Mariana Andrade gave Cowley an early 1-0 lead as she scored off the fifth assist of the season from Sophie Knaab with 29:35 left in the first half.
"Mariana's goal was huge for our team and allowed us to create additional opportunities," dos Santos said.
The Lady Tigers would remain in front 1-0 before Sara Cortez scored off an assist from Saki Sanno with 20:30 left to play. The goal for Cortez was her sixth of the season.
"She is a special player who has a bright future ahead of her," dos Santos said.
With Dodge City unable to put a shot on goal, Cowley would hold on for the 2-0 win, and goalkeeper Julia Suelly has now allowed only two goals in seven games.
The tandem of Conquistador goalkeepers Kimya Kante-Mavuba and Lucy Goss stopped 13 of the 15 shots they faced.
The Lady Tigers will play at Coffeyville on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Red Ravens are 2-8-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
"The girls understand we need to keep on winning, and continue to play our game," dos Santos said.
