Lady Tigers use a pair of second-half goals to defeat Barton
Recording its fourth straight shutout, the No. 7-ranked Cowley College women’s soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat rival Barton Community College 2-0 on Wednesday in Arkansas City.
"We did a good job of being patient and resilient until we were finally able to break through," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
The victory keeps the Lady Tigers unbeaten on the season with a record of 4-0-2. Cowley improves to 4-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Barton (4-4) had its three-game winning streak end and is now 2-3 in conference play.
With neither team able to score in the first half, Cowley broke the scoreless tie less than four minutes into the second half when freshman Saki Sanno scored off an assist from Sara Arsee.
"That goal by Saki was a huge relief and got the monkey off our back," dos Santos said.
Clinging to the 1-0 lead, the Lady Tigers got some breathing room when Sara Cortez sent a beautiful corner kick into the box, where Sabrina Barbosa headed in Cowley's second goal with 12:57 left to play.
Cowley would hold on to win as they outshot Barton 11-2, with Lady Tiger goalkeeper Julia Suelly recording her fourth shutout.
The Lady Tigers have allowed only two goals on the season.
"We have a good defense and Julia is doing a nice job in goal," dos Santos said.
Cowley will remain home to play Dodge City on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Conquistadors are 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
"Dodge City will come here motivated after winning at Seward on Wednesday," dos Santos said. "We need to play our game and keep improving each day."
