Sanno, Cortez shine in Lady Tigers’ 4-0 win over Butler
Getting two first-half goals from Saki Sanno and two more second-half goals from Sara Cortez, the No. 8-ranked Cowley College Lady Tiger soccer team shut out Butler Community College 4-0 on Wednesday in Arkansas City.
Cowley (3-0-1) is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 3-0. Butler (2-5-2) is now 1-2 in conference play.
"We came focused and ready to play and came away with a big victory," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "Even though it appeared we controlled the game, Butler is always dangerous."
Sanno, a freshman from Japan, scored her first two collegiate goals in the opening half to lift the Tigers to a 2-0 halftime lead. Cowley outshot Butler 9-0 over the game's first 45 minutes.
Cowley continued to add to its lead in the second half as Cortez scored a pair of goals. Cortez leads the Lady Tigers with five goals on the season.
"Sara did a phenomenal job, and her hard work has been paying off," dos Santos said.
Fellow freshman Julia Suelly stopped all six shots she faced in goal to record her second straight shutout.
Cowley will face another challenge when they play at No. 20-ranked Garden City on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Broncbusters are 7-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
"We need to be ready for another tough road game and expect Garden City to be another battle," dos Santos said.
