Big second half lifts Lady Tiger soccer team to 3-0 road win
Road warriors! Playing its third straight road contest to open the season, the No. 11-ranked Cowley College women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to win at Seward County 3-0 on Sunday.
The Lady Tigers improve to 2-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Seward falls to 2-1 and 1-1 in the conference.
The game was initially scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was moved to Sunday due to inclement weather.
"Having to stay overnight on Saturday, we did a good job of staying focused and handled the game like it was a business trip," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
Cowley outshot Seward 10-1 in the opening half, yet went into halftime with the game scoreless.
"We controlled the game in the first half, but were unable to finish our opportunities," dos Santos said.
The Lady Tigers broke through early in the second half when Sara Cortez scored off an assist from Sophie Knabb. Cowley would tack on goals from Mariana Andrade and Knabb as they went on to the 3-0 win.
"We did a good job of finishing our opportunities in the second half and had several more opportunities to score even more," dos Santos said.
Cowley outshot the Saints 20-6, and freshman goalkeeper Julia Suelly had to make just two saves to record her first collegiate shutout.
"Defensively, we were solid and did not allow much penetration," dos Santos said.
The Lady Tigers will play their home-opener on Wednesday while hosting No. 20-ranked Butler Community College at 5 p.m. The Grizzlies have played a difficult early-season schedule and are 2-4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
"Butler is always a tough opponent, so we need to be prepared and take advantage of the momentum we have created," dos Santos said.
