Lady Tigers battle to 1-1 tie at No. 3-ranked Seminole State College
In a season-opening matchup of two of the top teams in NJCAA Division I women’s soccer, the No. 11-ranked Cowley College soccer team opened its season at No. 3-ranked Seminole State College on Thursday in Seminole, OK. After falling behind early, the Lady Tigers battled back to force a 1-1 tie.
Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos saw some good things from his team in a difficult season-opener.
"We competed against a good Seminole team and I am happy how our players embraced the preparation we have had," dos Santos said.
Seminole State College would take the early lead in Thursday's game as Mary Awauh scored off an assist from Bry Russell only four minutes into the contest.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the first half, Cowley freshman Sara Cortez was fouled inside the goal area and would go on to tie the game at 1-1 by scoring on a penalty kick.
Neither team would score again despite the Lady Tigers creating scoring opportunities.
"Even though we tied a good team, we had several chances to score and win the match," dos Santos said.
Sophomore Stephany Silva started in goal for Cowley and played the first half before giving way to freshman Julia Suelly in the second half.
Cowley will remain on the road to face another challenge when they play at No. 12-ranked Hutchinson on Wednesday, September 10 at 6 p.m.
"We've got a lot to improve and these ladies are hungry to be better," dos Santos said. "They showed some flashes of how much better we can still be."
