Following back-to-back 4-3 defeats in games they led in the second half, the No. 14-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team took out some of its frustration in a 6-0 throttling of Coffeyville Saturday in Arkansas City.
The six goals scored on Saturday were a season-high for the Lady Tigers, who are now 3-2 overall and in the Jayhawk Conference. Coffeyville is now 0-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Cowley got first-half goals from Sara Bernal and Helene Braren to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Braren would add a second goal after intermission, while Himari Soto, Evellyn Borges, and Anna Linsler also scored in the win.
"I like how our girls came out focused and determined to compete," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "Despite several chances created in the first half and being able to score only two goals, they kept the intensity. In the second half we were able to finish more opportunities and get the lead needed.
Along with her goal, Borgess added two assists. Cowley dominated the game, out-shooting Coffeyville 22-0. Lady Tiger goalkeeper Marin Peoples was a part of Cowley's third shutout of the season.
The Lady Tigers will remain home to face Barton County on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Cougars are 3-2-2 overall, yet just 1-2-2 in the conference.
"Wednesday will be another important game," dos Santos said. "Barton is a good team and will come to town trying to get the three points from us. We will regroup and be ready for the match."
