Tiger wrestling team inches closer to the conference title
The No. 10-ranked Cowley College wrestling team ran its dual winning streak to six with victories of 26-19 over No. 8-ranked Pratt and 34-18 over Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Tuesday in Pratt, KS. With the wins, the Tigers moved within two more dual wins of achieving its first conference title since 2020.
Facing a Pratt Beaver team that had been a thorn in the side of the Tigers, Cowley got a big win from No. 12-ranked Colt Collett at 125 pounds as Collett defeated No. 9-ranked Zane Donley 10-4.
"Colt and Zane Donley have a long history and that was a big win for Colt," Cowley head coach Justice Circle said.
At 157 pounds, Cowley's Greyson Zellers also picked up a 10-4 win over Pratt's No. 2-ranked Jacob Godwin.
"That is a testament to the kind of kid Greyson is and the work he puts in," Circle said.
Wrestling at 184 pounds, No. 12-ranked David Sample pinned Pratt's Drew Withington to help seal the dual victory over the Beavers.
"This is a huge turning point for our program because Pratt has kind of run the Jayhawk for a long time, so to slay the giant at their place is a big accomplishment," Circle said.
Other Tigers to earn wins in the victory over Pratt were Evan Rodriguez (141 pounds), Ryker Agee (149 pounds), and Scout Trotter (174 pounds).
In the win over Fort Hays Tech Northwest, Cowley got pins from Louden Wolfe (133 pounds) and No. 2-ranked Evan Rodriguez (141 pounds), while getting tech fall victories from No. 5-ranked Scout Trotter (174 pounds) and David Sample (184 pounds).
The Tigers will wrestle against two more conference foes when they take part in the Barton County Tri-Dual on Wednesday, February 4 at 4 p.m. Cowley can claim the conference title with wins over Barton and Neosho.
"We are doing a good job of taking care of what's in front of us and taking it one match at a time," Circle said.
