With the Jayhawk Duals just around the corner, the No. 19-ranked Cowley College wrestling team appears to be in mid-season form after defeating its third straight Jayhawk Conference opponent in the past two weeks.
On Wednesday, the Tigers trailed host Pratt Community College 14-3 after the first four matches. However, Cowley flipped the script by winning five of the last six matches to earn the 25-18 road win.
Following a pair of tech fall victories by Liam Corbett (157 pounds) and Garrett Lange (165 pounds), and a 9-7 win by Jesse Nunez at 174 pounds, Cowley sophomore Ottis Peeler continued to dominate by pinning Pratt's Bobby Williams in the 184-pound weight class. The victory by Peeler gave Cowley a 22-14 lead.
However, after Pratt's Bryce Westmoreland was victorious at 197 pounds, the stage was set for the final match at 285 pounds to determine the winner of the dual.
As he did in last week's 22-21 win over No. 18-ranked Neosho County, Tiger sophomore Tyler Shannon sealed the victory by winning his match by a score of 3-0. Shannon's victory capped the 25-18 win for the Tigers.
"It was a very intense night," Cowley head coach Beau Vest said. "We had a couple matches that were real struggles, but we were able to do what we needed to get the win. Tyler Shannon was a rock at the end for us again and Garrett Lange and Ottis Peeler again set us up for the win with some big bonus points when needed."
Cowley's other win on Wednesday came from sophomore Austin Kincaid at 133 pounds.
The Tigers will now have some time to prepare for the Jayhawk Duals which will be held February 9-10 in Colby, KS.
"Heading into the Jayhawk Conference Duals we are going to continue to try and fine tune a couple things and basically just try to get healthy to make a run here at the end," Vest said.
