Cowley women’s basketball team picks up third straight win with a 75-56 victory over Garden City
With a large Homecoming crowd on hand on Wednesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium, the Cowley College women’s basketball team used a big second half to snap a 34-34 halftime tie and run away from Garden City in a 75-56 home win.
The Lady Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak at home and are now 13-13 overall and 9-11 in the Jayhawk Conference. Garden City falls to 15-10 overall and is just ahead of Cowley at 10-10 in the conference.
On Wednesday, Cowley got eight first-quarter points from freshman Saliyah Henderson-Johnson to lead 16-14.
Trailing 34-29, the Lady Tigers got five points from sophomore Zuzana Komor in the final 45 seconds of the first half to tie the game at 34-34.
A three-pointer by Garden City's Elektra Mijoll put the Broncbusters back in front 41-40 early in the third quarter, but Cowley would answer with a 13-2 run and led 59-47 after Mallory Jackson's three-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Garden City would make only 2-of-16 shots from the floor in the fourth quarter and shot only 31.7 percent in the 19-point road loss.
Cowley went 6-of-9 from three-point range in the second half and finished 10-of-17 from beyond the arc.
Mallory Jackson and Aniyah Burney combined to go 8-of-12 from three-point range and score 35 points. Jackson finished with a season-high 20 points while going 4-of-5 beyond the arc.
Freshman Naya Burleson added nine points and a season-high six blocked shots.
"I was pleased with how aggressive we were and that we stuck to our game plan," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We had a lot of people contribute to the win."
Garden City's Elektra Mjoll hit a pair of four-point plays and led the Broncbusters with 17 points.
Cowley will remain home to face conference-leading Butler Community College (25-1), ranked second nationally and 19-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Grizzlies, winners of 16 straight games, defeated the Lady Tigers 64-54 on January 7 in El Dorado.
