Lady Tigers go cold as Seward runs away for 73-52 road win
The Cowley College women’s basketball team trailed by only five points (50-45) early in the fourth quarter of its home game against Seward County on Wednesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium, before the Saints used a 14-2 run to pull away for a 73-52 win.
Cowley made just 1-of-17 attempts from the floor in the final quarter as they were out-scored 23-10.
"It was an old-fashioned outback whooping in the fourth quarter," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.
Cowley is now 9-8 overall and 5-6 in the Jayhawk Conference. Seward, winners of three games in a row, improves its overall record to 13-4 and its conference record to 8-3.
The Lady Tigers led Wednesday's game 22-21 following a basket by Aniyah Burney with 6:15 remaining in the first half, but Seward responded with three-pointers from Kimora Fagan on each of its next three possessions and went into halftime with a 30-26 lead.
The Saints' lead would grow to 50-42 heading to the final quarter of play.
After pulling within five points of the lead at 50-45, Cowley went cold, and Seward ran away with the 21-point road victory.
The Lady Tigers went 7-of-16 from three-point range, but made only 6-of-40 attempts from inside the arc. Cowley was led by freshman Saliyah Henderson-Johnson's 16 points and seven rebounds, while Burney and Mallory Jackson added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Cowley shot a season-low 23.2 percent from the floor.
Seward, on the other hand, went 13-of-28 from beyond the arc and was led by Kimora Fagan's 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting from three-point range.
The Lady Tigers will attempt to snap a three-game road skid when they play at Barton on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars have struggled to a 6-11 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Jayhawk Conference.
