Lady Tigers move over .500 in conference play with a 92-51 win over Ft. Hays Tech
The Cowley College women’s basketball team continued its good feelings heading into winter break by forcing winless Fort Hays Tech Northwest into 31 turnovers in a 92-51 win on Saturday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The Lady Tigers finish the first semester with a record of 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. Fort Hays Tech Northwest (0-13) is now 0-7 in conference play.
Fort Hays Tech Northwest came out shooting the ball at a high clip, making 5-of-8 three-pointers in the opening quarter, yet trailed 23-17 due to Cowley forcing Fort Hays Tech into nine turnovers.
Cowley's lead would grow to 48-28 at the end of the first half as they out-scored Fort Hays Tech 21-3 on points off turnovers. Freshman Aniyah Burney scored all 11 of her points in the opening half.
Leading 69-37 at the end of the third quarter, Cowley was able to empty its bench, as 11 players scored in the 41-point home win.
Freshman Naya Burleson scored 11 points in 14 minutes of action, and Cowley got 43 points of bench production.
"Naya was really good, and I was pleased with the players that came in and gave us solid minutes," Clark said.
Vitoria Fernandes went 4-of-7 from three-point range and finished with 16 points as Fort Hays Tech Northwest made 13-of-36 three-pointers, but 31 turnovers led to Cowley scoring 43 points off turnovers.
"We were good at creating turnovers and getting ourselves some easy baskets," Clark said.
Cowley freshman Saliyah Henderson-Johnson finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and nine steals.
"Saliyah gets her hands on so much and is so athletic," Clark said.
Cowley will have some time off to get healthy and work on things before playing at Garden City (10-2) on Saturday, January 3, at 2 p.m. The Broncbusters are 4-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.
