Redlands sweeps home and away series with Lady Tigers, winning 50-45 in Ark City
The Redlands Community College Cougars have turned out to be a tough matchup for the Cowley College women’s basketball team as the Cougars defeated the Lady Tigers for the second time this season, this time by a score of 50-45 on Tuesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Cowley is now 4-2 on the season, with both losses coming against the Cougars. The Lady Tigers previously lost at Redlands by a score of 60-48 on November 5.
After shooting only 26.4 percent (14-of-53) in the earlier loss at Redlands, Cowley was again held to 26 percent shooting (15-of-56) in Tuesday's defeat.
Despite the tough shooting night, Cowley led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, 24-22 at halftime, and 39-35 after three quarters of play. However, Cowley combined to make only 4-of-30 shot attempts in the second and fourth quarters. The Lady Tigers went 2-of-18 from the floor while being out-scored 15-6 in the final quarter of play.
Despite its inability to consistently make shots, Cowley trailed by only three points (46-43) in the game's final minute of play. However, three consecutive turnovers doomed the Tigers' chances of winning.
"We battled, but could not finish plays," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We need to play smarter down the stretch and figure out a way to win games like that."
Redlands' bench outscored Cowley's bench 25-3, while the Tiger bench players combined to shoot 1-of-14 from the floor.
Alaura Pruitt was one of the bench players who stepped up for Redlands as she finished with 12 points. Haven Joseph added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting as the Cougars improved to 6-1.
Freshman Megan Simon's 16 points led Cowley, while Saliyah Henderson-Johnson added eight points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
Cowley will open conference play on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they play at No. 1-ranked Dodge City. The Conquistadors are 5-0 and have won each game but one by at least 40 points.
"We hope to stick together and stay competitive," Clark said.
