Cowley women's basketball well represented on All-Region team
March 11, 2011
Fresh off finishing as co-champions of the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division and winning 25 games, the Cowley College women's basketball team had three players receive All-Region VI recognition.
After being named the Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player, Cowley sophomore Ariani Silva (13.8 points per game) was one of five players named a first-team all-region selection. Silva broke the school record for three pointers in a season (91) and in a career (126), while her 756 career points ranks 16th on Cowley's all-time scoring list.
Sophomore guard Maylisa Johnson, who averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game, was named second-team all-region. While, freshman Breanna Bryant Bryant, who was second on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game, and ranked second in the Jayhawk East in steals (102), was named an honorable mention all-region selection. Despite being only 5-foot-5, Bryant also contributed 3.8 rebounds per game.
"I think this reflects what a good year all three had as individuals and what a great group of kids we had collectively," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.
The Lady Tigers will miss Silva and Johnson as the duo helped Cowley to 46 wins over the past two seasons.
"They will be hard to replace, they were solid players and great people," Clark said.
However, Clark is happy to be returning Bryant to help lead next year's team.
"She's a competitor," Clark said. "Having her coming back is huge for us."
