Defense keys Lady Tigers' 65-28 win over Kansas Wesleyan JV
November 9, 2009
Limiting the visiting Kansas Wesleyan University JV to only 17 percent shooting, the Cowley College women's basketball team defeated the Lady Coyotes 65-28 Saturday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Kansas Wesleyan made just 9-of-52 shot attempts and was out-rebounded 45-19 by the much-taller Lady Tigers. Cowley, which led 26-11 at the end of the first half, shot 59 percent in the second half as they improved to 2-1 on the season and put Thursday night's loss at Seminole State behind them.
"I thought we made a big jump from the first half to the second half," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "Our effort was better than the other day."
Cowley College freshman Jasamyne Saunders came off the bench to lead all scorers with 13 points. Saunders created many of her points herself as she also finished with a game-high six steals.
Sophomore Kaneesha Lee added 11 points and five rebounds, while freshmen Anna Sonka (nine points, nine rebounds) and Ariani Silva (nine points, five rebounds, five assists) also played well and combined to make 6-of-10 three-point attempts.
"We are learning and getting better, but we still need to learn to play together," Clark said.
Abby Sherbert led Kansas Wesleyan with nine points in the defeat. Sherbert went 3-of-eight from three-point range, as the Lady Coyotes were 7-of-30 from beyond the arc as a team.
Cowley will now prepare to play at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa tonight at 6 p.m. Clark hopes to see a better effort from his team in its second road game of the season.
"We have got to go on the road and play tough," Clark said.
