Lady Tiger softball team splits doubleheader at Allen
The Cowley College softball team had its eight-game win streak come to an end in a split of a doubleheader at Allen Community College on Wednesday. The Lady Tigers bounced back from a 2-0 loss in game one to defeat the Red Devils 5-1 in the nightcap.
Cowley (24-20) is tied for second place in the conference with Kansas City and remains one game in front of Allen (16-23) with a record of 10-4. The Red Devils are 9-5 in the conference, just in front of Labette (9-6).
In game one, Allen starting pitcher Andrea Ruby (8-9) tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in the 2-0 victory.
Cowley's hits came from Dacey Morris and Gracy Smith, who each went 1-for-2.
Lady Tiger starting pitcher Dacey Morris had her five-start win streak come to an end as she is now 13-8. Morris allowed six hits and two runs in six innings, while striking out three and walking none.
Cowley would get off to a fast start in game two and cruised to the 5-1 win.
Carson Carpenter's two-run homer capped a four-run first inning for the Tigers. Allen would scratch across a run off Hannah Howard in the second inning to pull within 4-1.
Norah Macken would increase Cowley's lead to 5-1 with a solo home run leading off the fifth inning. The homer was the second of the season for Macken.
Hannah Howard would make the lead stand up as the freshman allowed only three hits while winning her fourth start in a row. Howard is now 9-4 on the season.
Allen starting pitcher Addie Keys (5-7) settled down after the first inning but was tagged with the loss after allowing five hits and four earned runs in seven innings.
Cowley will return to Ark City to host Kansas City Kansas Community College (32-16) in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
