Softball continues offensive onslaught with doubleheader sweep of Coffeyville
After scoring double figures in both wins of a home doubleheader against Independence on Thursday, the Cowley College softball team kept the offensive momentum going by scoring a season-high 21 runs in a 21-5 five-inning run-rule of Coffeyville Community College on Saturday at Ed Hargrove Field before run-ruling the Red Ravens 11-3 in game two.
Cowley, winners of four games in a row, evens its record at 19-19 overall while improving to 7-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville has dropped nine games in a row, falling to 10-20 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
In game one, Cowley pounded out 21 hits in only four innings and got a grand slam and five runs batted in from sophomore shortstop Taverli Tennant. Dacey Morris and Hannah Howard also homered in the win as the trio combined to go 9-for-11 with 11 runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Taylor Clay also played well, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, and Kiki Warner added a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Clay leads Cowley with a .437 batting average.
Morris (11-7) earned the win, allowing seven hits and four runs in four innings pitched. Madison Baker came on to pitch the fifth and allowed one run in relief.
In game two, Cowley trailed early by a score of 3-1 before scoring 10 straight runs to win 11-3.
Hannah Howard settled down after allowing Coffeyville to score three runs in the second inning. The right-hander did not allow another run while pitching all five innings and improved her record to 6-4.
Warner homered and drove in four in the victory, while Breanna Curry went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Warner is now batting .387, while Curry raised her average to .361.
The Lady Tigers will attempt to complete a 6-0 homestand when they host Pratt Community College (6-29) in a doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m. Cowley is 3-0 against Pratt this season, having outscored the Beavers 25-3 in the three contests.
