Carpenter’s walk-off home run helps Hoyt earn win No. 400 at Cowley
Aided by Breanna Curry’s home-run saving catch in the top of the seventh inning of game two of its home doubleheader against Independence on Thursday, the Cowley College softball team then got a walk-off home run by Carsen Carpenter in the bottom of the seventh to help the Lady Tigers sweep the doubleheader 14-1 and 10-9 and earn head coach Jenny Hoyt her 400th career win.
After needing only five innings to run-rule the Pirates in game one, Cowley and Indy were deadlocked at 9-9 when Curry robbed the Pirates' Madyson Paxton of a home run at the centerfield wall. The circus catch ended up No. 1 on SportsCenter's Top-10 plays.
"The way Bre plays outfield is so impressive," Hoyt said. "Her practice reps to her in-game reps are always with an intent, so seeing her with this big catch was a beyond proud moment for us."
Moments later, Carpenter stepped into the batter's box and belted the game-winning homer, her second of the game and eighth of the season.
"With the momentum we had from Bre's catch, Carsen stepped in wanting to be in that position for her team," Hoyt said.
Cowley is now 17-19 overall and 5-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Indy falls to 7-23 and 1-5 in conference play.
Reaching 400 wins is something Hoyt does not take lightly, now in year 11 as the Tigers' head coach.
"There is a lot that plays into the 400 wins," Hoyt said. "Everyone plays a role in those wins, from the great players in our program, to the staff that works with those athletes, to great assistants, to my mentors and role models, to just the support we have amongst our program. It's truly a blessing to experience those wins, because to me, every day is a win, doing something I love."
In game one, the Lady Tigers pounded out 17 hits in the five-inning win. Taylor Clay went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while Carsen Carpenter homered and drove in three runs.
Dacey Morris earned the win, allowing two hits and one run in five innings pitched.
In game two, Lady Tiger pitchers Hannah Howard, Kylie Cartwright, and Lauren Howerton allowed 16 hits in six innings before Morris (10-7) came on to earn the win in relief.
Cowley held leads of 7-2 and 9-5 before Indy tied the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Then came the wild finish with the Lady Tigers prevailing 10-9.
Sophomore Taverli Tennant was a single away from hitting for the cycle, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The home run was her 10th of the season. Kiki Warner also played well, adding her second home run of the season as she and Norah Macken went 3-for-3.
Cowley will remain home to play a doubleheader vs. Coffeyville on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Red Ravens (10-18) have lost seven games in a row and are 2-4 in the Jayhawk East.
