Cowley softball team picks up a pair of run-rule wins over the Friends JV
Getting a pair of strong starts on the mound, the Cowley College softball team run-ruled the Friends University JV 8-0 and 10-1 on Thursday at Ed Hargrove Field in Arkansas City.
Cowley improves to 12-14 on the season. The Lady Tigers allowed only three hits in Thursday's doubleheader.
"Our pitching had a great day of controlling their hitters," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said.
Dacey Morris (6-6) had her best start of the season in the opener as the right-hander struck out nine in a 1-hit shutout of the Falcons. Morris also had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in out of the leadoff spot.
Sophomore Taverli Tennant doubled and drove in four runs in the victory.
"Dacey and Taverli were huge run producers for us in game one," Hoyt said.
In game two, Friends took an early 1-0 lead before Hannah Howard settled down on the mound and the Tigers rattled off 10 straight runs to run-rule the Falcons 10-1.
"Our defense was very sharp behind Hannah," Hoyt said.
Howard (4-2) also did well at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. The Lady Tigers finished with 19 hits in the nine innings of the doubleheader.
"Our focus on the offensive side was to execute innings when we had runners on, and seven out of the nine innings we played, we did a great job of meeting that goal," Hoyt said.
Sophomore Breanna Curry was one of four Cowley players with two hits in the win, going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in.
Cowley will open conference play at Fort Scott on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Greyhounds are 6-14 on the season.
"We have to focus on one game at a time, having that strong competitor mentality," Hoyt said.
