Lady Tiger softball team splits home opener against NOC-Tonkawa
With the wind blowing out on Tuesday in Arkansas City, the No. 18-ranked Cowley College softball team got a three-run homer from Taverli Tennant in a 7-6 game one win over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa before the Mavericks came back to run-rule the Lady Tigers 13-1 in five innings of game two.
Cowley is now 3-3 on the season while the Mavericks are 5-3.
In game one, Tennant and freshman Taylor Clay had three hits apiece, and the Lady Tigers led 6-1 after four innings of play.
NOC-Tonkawa would hit four home runs in the game, but Cowley would hold on for the 7-6 victory.
Lady Tiger redshirt freshman Dacey Morris allowed eight hits and six runs while going the distance on the mound.
"Dacey pushed through game one after giving up a couple of big hits, so it was good to see her fight through the finish," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "I really liked how we responded offensively through game one. The top of the line-up really was the tone setter for a lot of strong innings we had."
Cowley freshman Madison Baker got the start in game two and allowed three homers and five runs in the top of the first inning.
With the Mavericks hitting four more homers in game two, the Lady Tigers avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fourth inning when Breanna Curry singled home Tennant. However, that would be all the offense Cowley could muster as they were held to three hits in the 13-1 defeat.
"Overall, as a team, we have to make adjustments quicker throughout the game," Hoyt said.
Baker, Kylie Cartwright, and Hannah Howard combined to allow 10 hits and five walks in game two.
"NOC made adjustments to our pitchers and rallied around a lot of hits for the day, which as a pitching staff we have to do a better job of keeping them more off balance," Hoyt said.
The Mavericks' Breanna Gomez hit three home runs in the doubleheader, while Caitlyn Cooper and Paiton Hedges hit two home runs apiece.
Cowley will have some time off before playing at Pratt Community College in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Beavers are 1-9 on the season.
