Softball has tough weekend in Texas

Venturing on the road to take on some stiff early season competition, the No. 15-ranked Cowley College softball team found wins hard to come by. The Lady Tigers went 0-4 in the games played Friday and Saturday in Weatherford, TX.

Cowley opened play on Friday with a 10-0 loss against host Weatherford College. Cowley would then fall behind early in an 11-8 loss to Rose State College. The Lady Tigers would return to the field on Saturday and lose games against Barton Community College 10-5 and again vs. Rose State 12-9.

Cowley is now 4-7 on the season.                   

"We just did not play well this weekend," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "The positive was we are scoring runs, we just allowed teams way too many runs this weekend.  Our defensive and pitching weren't as sharp this weekend as we needed them to be. A lot of our opponents runs came with two outs, so developing that sense of urgency to get the final out and remain in control of the inning has to be our mindset going forward."

After being limited to two hits in the opener, Cowley had 38 hits in the other three games. Kyla Bonnarens had a big weekend for the Lady Tigers, going 8-of-11 with seven runs batted in. Sophomore Maci Cole also played well, going 8-for-15 with four runs batted in.

Rose State pounded out 19 hits and took advantage of four Cowley errors in the finale as they held on for the 12-9 win.

Cowley will return home to play a doubleheader against Seminole State College Thursday at 1 and 3 before playing two games at Seminole State on Friday beginning at 1.

"Seminole will be a tough opponent," Hoyt said. "As a team these next couple days we will need to tighten up our defensive mistakes and get our pitchers back to being aggressive and attacking the zone."
