Lady Tiger softball team goes 2-1 at Winter Blast Tournament

The No. 15-ranked Cowley College softball team had a solid showing at the Winter Blast Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Denison, TX. The Lady Tigers opened with a pair of wins before losing its finale against Tyler Junior College (X).

Cowley opened play on Friday with a 7-4 win over Carl Albert State College. Freshman second baseman Kyla Bonnarens doubled twice and went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, while sophomore shortstop Maci Cole went 2-for-3 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

Freshman Ellie Kuntz (1-0) picked up her first collegiate victory as she struck out six and walked none in four innings pitched. Kuntz allowed just two earned runs before Jaala Nowlin went the final three innings, allowing four hits and one run.

The Lady Tigers returned to the field on Saturday and defeated Vernon College 6-3. Cowley got a home run from Cole and three runs batted in from Shayne Roberts, while Saige Smith went the distance on the mound. Smith struck out six and walked six but allowed just one earned run as she improved her record to 2-0 on the season.

In the finale, Cowley took an early 1-0 lead over Tyler before the Apaches run-ruled the Lady Tigers 10-2 in five innings of play.

Cole homered for the third time in five games and had two of Cowley's four hits in the loss. Kuntz (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing five hits and five runs in three innings pitched. Nowlin was also tagged for five runs in her one inning of work.

Cowley is now 3-2 on the season and will return home to play a doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Tuesday at 1 and 3 p.m.
