Tiger tennis team takes down No. 15-ranked Washburn

The Cowley College men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the latest NJCAA Division I tennis rankings, continued its difficult spring schedule by playing at Washburn University, ranked No. 15 in the latest NCAA Division II poll, Sunday in Topeka, KS. The Tigers improved its record to 10-2 on the season with a 4-3 victory over the Ichabods.

Cowley won two of three doubles matches against Washburn before entering singles play.

"We started off strong by winning the doubles point and carried that same energy into the singles," Cowley assistant coach Arianna Raga said.

Cowley's other wins came from its top-three singles players. Takeshi Taco and Hanamichi Carvajal won three-set matches, while Boruch Skierkier defeated Washburn's Miquel Perez in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).

"Washburn is a very strong team, but the boys were able to win some close matches," Raga said.

The Tiger men's tennis team will now turn its focus to competing at the Region VI Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Wichita, KS.

*No. 1 – Takeshi Taco (CC) defeated Raul Alin Dicu 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. 

*No. 2 – Boruch Skierkier (CC) defeated Miquel Perez 6-2, 6-3.

*No. 3 – Hanamichi Carvajal (CC) defeated Tim Hammes 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

*No. 4 – Gaston Erhardt (CC) lost to Sebastian Pjontek 0-6, 3-6.

*No. 5 – Harry Collins (CC) lost to Daniel Bird 4-6, 3-6.

*No. 6 – Andoni Garmendia (CC) lost to Santiago Rendon 4-6, 4-6. 

DOUBLES

*No. 1 - Hirano & Bruno (CC) defeated Pjontek & Earle 6-4. 

*No. 2 - Skierkier & Erhardt (CC) defeated Dicu & Noah Neidech 7-6 (4).

*No. 3 - Taco & Garmendia (CC) lost to Rendon & Perez 5-7.
