Ranked tennis teams no match for Tigers

The Cowley College men and women's tennis teams recently battled a pair of ranked opponents and showed the strengths of their lineups as they won easily. The top-ranked Tiger men defeated 11^th-ranked Pratt 9-0 Saturday in Arkansas City, while the No. 4-ranked Lady Tigers blasted seventh-ranked Weatherford 8-1.

In the men's match, Cowley did not drop a set as they improved its record to 9-2 on the season.

"The boys simply took care of business," Cowley head coach Manuel Raga said. "We played well, had good energy in both singles and doubles and got the result we wanted."

Sophomores Takeshi Taco and Andoni Garmendia did not drop a game at No. 3 doubles and also swept their singles opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

The Lady Tigers won their third straight match by taking all three doubles matches against Weatherford before winning five of six singles matches.

"I am so proud of how the ladies competed," Raga said. "Weatherford is a tough team, but we played with a lot of energy, followed the game-plan, and got the win."

The Lady Tigers will now prepare for the national tournament May 7-11 in Tucson, AZ.

"We have about three weeks before the national championship, so we are going to work extremely hard to be ready for it," Raga said.

The Tiger men will return to action Friday in Topeka when they play at NCAA Division II Washburn University at 2 p.m. The Ichabods are currently ranked in the top-20 of the latest NCAA Division II poll.

We have a tough one on Friday against Washburn University, but we are looking forward to that challenge," Raga said.
