Top-ranked Tiger tennis team battles hard in loss to WSU

One day after defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State University 7-0, the Cowley College men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the latest NJCAA Division I tennis poll, stepped up its level of competition by playing a match at Wichita State University Saturday at the Coleman Tennis Complex. The Tigers got wins from Takeshi Taco at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Gaston Erhardt and Boruch Skierkier before losing to the Shockers by a score of 6-1.

Cowley is now 6-1 on the season, while the Shockers improve to 11-8.

"The men's team fought hard, Gaston Erhardt and Andoni Garmendia both had very close singles matches but fell a little short at the end," Cowley assistant coach Arianna Raga said. "Though we lost against a great team, we will keep working toward our goals."  

Cowley will host conference rival and third-ranked Seward County Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Arkansas City High School tennis courts.

"This is a very important match for us, and we hope to see everyone out there supporting both the men and women's team," Raga said.

*No. 1 - Aymeric Bruno/Taiyo Hirano (CC) lost to Richards/Minarik (WSU) 6-3.

*No. 2 – Gaston Erhardt/Boruch Skierkier (CC) defeated Lo/Acevedo (WSU) 6-3.

*No. 3 - Takeshi Taco/Andoni Garmendia (CC) lost to Mrsic/Ovil (WSU) 7-6. 

SINGLES

*No. 1 - Taco (CC) defeated Minarik (WSU) 7-5, 6-0.

*No. 2 - Skierkier (CC) lost to Acevedo (WSU) 6-2, 6-3.

*No. 3 - Carvajal (CC) lost to Ovil (WSU) 6-3, 6-1.

*No. 4 - Erhardt (CC) lost to Mrsic (WSU) 6-4, 7-5.

*No. 5 - Collins (CC) lost to Lo (WSU) 6-0, 6-3.

*No. 6 - Garmendia (CC) lost to Richards (WSU) 6-4, 6-3.
