Facing former Cowley College tennis player and head coach Josh Cobble's tennis teams at Cameron University Monday in Lawton, OK, the No. 2-ranked Tiger men blasted NCAA Division II Cameron 6-1. However, the No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers dropped some close singles matches in a 6-1 loss to the Aggies.
"Both Cameron teams are tough to play at home," Cowley head coach Manuel Raga said. "The conditions were tough as well, it was very windy, mentally we had to stay strong and compete hard if we wanted to win."
This marked the second year in a row the Tigers have beaten Cameron on the men's side. The Tigers won five of six singles matches and two of three double matches in its opening match of the spring season.
"Cameron is a very good team, well coached, and play amazing at home," Raga said. "For the guys to go out there and dominate the way we did shows how strong we are. This win just keeps giving us more confidence going forward."
In the women's match, Lady Tiger sophomore Isid Hernandez pulled out a thrilling 7-6, 5-7, 14-12 win at No. 1 singles. Ntokozo Zungu suffered a tough, three-set defeat at No. 2 singles and Mariia Koroleva lost 6-7, 6-7 at No. 5 singles.
"I felt our girls couldn't play their game and it was disappointing to get outplayed pretty much in every spot besides Isid Hernandez pulling off a great win at No. 1 singles," Raga said.
Cowley's match at Midwestern State on Wednesday has been rescheduled to March 2. The Tiger tennis teams will play next on Friday at NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State at 8:30 a.m. in Maryville, MO.
"We are looking forward to the challenge of playing at Northwest Missouri State," Raga said.
