Strong singles play leads Tiger men's tennis team to season-opening win over Rockhurst
February 21, 2012
Winning four of six singles matches, the No. 8-ranked Cowley College men's tennis team was able to rally to defeat NCAA Division II Rockhurst University by a score of 5-4 Sunday in Kansas City, MO.
After dropping two of three doubles matches against Rockhurst, the Tigers came back to get solid play from its singles lineup.
"To come from 2-1 down to win some clutch singles matches was good to see," Cobble said. "Even the singles matches we lost were really evenly played."
Sophomore Zack Evenden, who teamed with Jack Busby to pick up Cowley's lone doubles win, came back from a loss of the first set against John Lazenby at No. 1 singles to win the next two sets. While, freshman Edgardo Tapia also lost the first set at No. 3 singles before rallying to win in three sets.
"Those were great come from behind wins for Zack and Edgardo," Cobble said. "It was good to see them deal with adversity and come back strong."
Freshman Manuel Raga won in straight sets at No. 4 singles, and Josh Golding picked up his first collegiate win with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 win over Victor Klintcharov at No. 5 singles.
Cowley will now prepare to play Friday at Cameron University in Lawton, OK at 1 p.m. They will then face Midwestern State University Saturday in Wichita Falls, Texas at 10 a.m.
"They are both very good NCAA Division II schools, so it will be tough challenges for us," Cobble said. "It will be a good opportunity to see how we stack up against that level of competition."
