Ishii’s two goals help Cowley to a 2-0 win over Seward
Sophomore Kanta Ishii, the returning Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-American, scored a pair of first-half goals for the No. 3-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team in a 2-0 home win over Seward County on Wednesday in Arkansas City.
"Kanta once again made a difference for us, but he didn't do it alone; he had help from all the other players," Cowley head coach Marcos Ribeiro said. "Our two goals came from good passes: the first from Nino (Inchico), who had a great game yesterday, and the second was a beautiful layoff from Renan (syrio), who didn't score yesterday but was really important for the team and also played a great game.
Ishii leads Cowley in goals (7) and assists (6) as the Tigers improve to 8-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cowley is five points in front of second-place Dodge City (3-2-2 in the conference) with four conference games remaining.
Seward, losers of three games in a row, is now 4-6 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
On Wednesday, Ishii put Cowley ahead by scoring his first goal of the game with 19:12 remaining in the first half. Then, just over five minutes into the second half, Ishii would add his second goal to give the Tigers some breathing room.
The game was a physical contest with Cowley being whistled for 19 fouls and Seward called for 17.
Tiger goalkeeper Lucas Lowry would make the lead stand up as he stopped all four shots he faced while posting his sixth shutout of the season.
"It was a good performance; the only thing that I wasn't completely happy with was that we should have scored more goals," Ribeiro said. "Some were good saves from their keeper, some a little unlucky like Hikaru Nakagawa's great finish that hit the post, but many times our decision-making was a little off yesterday."
Cowley will have some time off before hosting Garden City (9-3-2) on Wednesday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m.
"It is good that we have the weekend off, a lot of players need some rest," Ribeiro said. "The goal is to use this time to rest and prepare well because Garden City will be another tough match."
