Bruno Conto’s goal lifts the Tiger soccer team to a 1-0 win at No. -7-ranked Indian Hills
In a matchup of two teams that advanced to the semifinals of last year’s national tournament, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team got a late goal from Bruno Conto and made the lead stand up in a 1-0 win at No.7-ranked Indian Hills on Saturday in Ottumwa, IA.
The Tigers remain unbeaten with a record of 7-0-1. The Warriors drop to 6-2-2.
After a scoreless first 75 minutes, Conto scored off an assist from Hayato Yoshitake, and Cowley made the lead hold up. The goal was the first of the season for Conto.
"It was a tough game," Cowley head coach Marcos Ribeiro said. "I am proud of the effort the team put in to get the win. Indian Hills has talented players all over the field, and I thought they were better in the first half. After our talk at halftime, the boys came out with a different attitude, and we managed to create more chances and score the goal, with Bruno's great finish."
Tiger goalkeeper Lukas Lowry stopped all four shots he faced and recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
"Our defense was strong throughout the game, allowing us to get another clean sheet, which is very important," Ribeiro said.
Cowley will return home to face Seward County on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Saints (4-5) are winless in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 0-5. The Tigers defeated Seward 3-1 on September 14 in Liberal, KS.
"The game on Wednesday will also be tough; it's the start of the second half of conference play, and every team has improved," Ribeiro said. "They all raise their level when they play against us, so we need to be ready to defend our home."
