Tiger soccer team allows late goal, ties Coffeyville 2-2
After starting the season with six straight wins, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team suffered its first blemish with a 2-2 tie at Coffeyville.
The Tigers held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal by Leonardo Leitao. The goal was the third of the season for Leitao.
The game would remain 1-0 before the scoring picked up in the game's final 17 minutes.
With 17 minutes left, Coffeyville's Alejandro Sevilla scored off an assist from Ivanytskyy Lev to tie the game at 1-1.
Only two minutes later, Cowley sophomore Renan Syrio regained the Lead for the Tigers by scoring his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Yushin Nakano.
It appeared Cowley's lead would stand up before the Red Ravens' Jacob Shaw scored the game-tying goal with 1:45 remaining.
"I don't think we were at our best, but we controlled the majority of the game," Cowley head coach Marcos Ribeiro said. "We should have finished them earlier, but missed our chances and kept them in it. A few silly mistakes and a lack of concentration gave them the opportunities, and they scored the two goals."
Cowley is now 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference, while Coffeyville moves to 4-3-3 and 0-1-3 in the conference.
"Hopefully, all the frustration the team felt after the game can become a learning moment for us to grow and improve," Ribeiro said.
The Tigers will play at No. 7-ranked Indian Hills on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Warriors are 6-1-2 on the season.
"On Saturday, we have another tough game," Ribeiro said. "Indian Hills has a lot of quality, but I am confident we will perform much better than we did against Coffeyville."
